Mongabay: A Harita group mining company in West Kalimantan, Indonesia has been operating well outside of its permit boundary, reports local NGO, Forest Monitoring Volunteers of Borneo (RPHK). Their investigation found that PT. Karya Utama Tambang Jaya, is operating illegally on 78 hectares of land. The company holds permits to mine bauxite (aluminum ore) on 8,878 hectares. RPHK identified the violation using satellite imagery, then verified their findings by field-sampling two randomly selected points....

Mining company settles on dust violation

A mining company has reached a settlement with the state over air quality standards at a mine north of Butte. In a document released Friday by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, the state reported that on April 29, 2013, a DEQ staff member noticed dust blowing from the Yankee Doodle tailings area.

Union Pacific Railroad must pay $51,000 in punitive damages and back pay to a Carson-based employee for violating federal whistle-blower provisions by illegally suspending him for videotaping a safety inspection on his cellphone, workplace safety regulators announced Friday. The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigators found the company had suspended the employee after he refused to delete video footage of an air compressor test aboard a locomotive.
