Overview The generic tasks to be performed are following reported Providing expert technical support in Propulsion for Spacecraft chemical propulsion and for Launchers liquid and solid propulsion to the Agencys project teams responsible for the development of spacecraft and launchers, throughout all the project phases. Supporting the activities for studies, experimental investigations and engineering developments in spacecraft and launcher propulsion components, equipment, subsystems, systems. Supporting the activities for studies, experimental investigations and engineering developments in advanced propulsion components, equipment, subsystems, systems, such as nuclear propulsion, solarthermal upper stages, Airbreathing Propulsion, Advanced Chemical Systems, MEMS etc. Extra support shall be provided in the following activities provision of specialised support to Agency feasibility and project definition studies, preparatory programmes and approved projects in the field of chemical propulsion participation in the definition and execution of the Agencys technology programmes contribution to the overseeing activities of the Technical and Quality Management Directorate harmonisation with other ESA and national developments and monitoring of applicable development trends provision of specialised support to feasibility, preparatory programmes and approved projects in the field of chemical propulsion, including CDF participation assessment and development of chemical propulsion novel propulsion concepts e.g. Nuclear and Airbreathing technologies assessment and development of relevant advanced propulsion methods, processes and concepts MEMS propulsion, Green Propulsion, Advanced Manufacturing etc the configurationsystem design of chemical propulsion systems including the initiation of appropriate critical technology developments coordinating support by other DTEC sections establishment and promotion of design and engineering standards in the area of chemical propulsion the undertaking of programmes of basic experimental research and evaluationqualification testing in the chemical propulsion in the ESA Propulsion Laboratory at ESTEC. Specific qualification requirements University degree MSc. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with emphasis in space propulsion related subjects. Proven experience in the design, development andor testing of chemical propulsion systems andor components for spacecraft andor launcher applications. A good knowledge of other specialist technological areas involved in space propulsion i.e. materials, thermal, mechanical would also be desirable. Fluent in the English language spoken and written. Knowledge of another European language is an asset. Legal and Security Requirements All applicants must be legally allowed to work in The Netherlands Applicants are required to provide a copy of their passport and degree certificate. Aurora will validate the Degree with the issuing University and provide evidence to ESA. Job Description Astroscale is seeking to employ an experienced and motivated Propulsion Engineer at our facility based in Harwell, UK. This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic and rapidly growing company seeking to make a positive contribution to the growing problem of orbital debris that endangers mankinds continued use of space as an asset. This role will allow the right candidate to shape solutions for our missions. Whilst the candidate will primarily work in the UK, they will interact extensively with a larger team in Astroscales Japan Office and may expect to be required to travel to Tokyo as needed in support of Astroscale projects and operations. Responsibilities Lead development and design activities for the Propulsion Subsystems on Astroscale spacecraft derive and maintain subsystem requirements define and develop subsystem architecture analysis, design and sizing of both chemical propulsion CP and electric propulsion EP systems Performing rapid feasibility studies into different propulsion scenarios and architectures, including development of any models and tools necessary for analysis. Coordinate with other teams at subsystem and at system level to define ConOps, ICDs, development and verification plans. Selection of relevant components for CP and EP, understanding the intricacies of buymake decisions. Interact with partners and suppliers for the provision of propulsion equipment. Support procurement engineers with specification, tradeoff and selection of propulsion equipment. Supporting test engineers with testing of models functional e.g. thrust analysis, environmental e.g. vibe, thermal, TVAC, requirements verification, analysis of test data and correlation with propulsion technical models. Essential Skills experience Diploma Bachelor or Master degree in propulsion, mechanical or aerospace engineering. 5 years of commercial experience in propulsion systems analysis, design procurement and test for satellites. An in depth understanding of the tradeoffs in application of Chemical Propulsion and Electrical Propulsion systems. A good knowledge of propulsion suppliers and products and the stateoftheart in propulsion systems and propulsion RD. Good understanding of spacecraft mission lifecycle and milestones e.g. MDR, PDR, CDR, etc. Good understanding of system engineering managing requirements through the full project lifecycle. Desired Skills Experience Demonstrable experience of spacecraft design lifecycle at all stages from initial concept to design, test, and operations. A basic knowledge in the following areas debris removal, endoflife, inorbit servicing. Whilst the working language across all Astroscale divisions is English, proficiency in spoken andor written Japanese would be considered an asset.
