Job description The selected candidate will initially support current and future European Space Agency earth observation missions. Flight dynamics consultants plan, realise and test physical algorithms modelling spacecraft orbital and attitude dynamics. Typical domain knowledge applicable to this position include classicalcelestial mechanics, statistics, parameter estimation, optimisation, numerical methods, software development testing. Responsibilities The Flight Dynamics Consultant will support activities at the customer site such as Orbit and attitude manoeuvre preparation, Manoeuvre performance analysis, orbit determination and propagation, trajectory optimisation, product generation, software test and validation, support for simulation campaigns and critical operations Attitude command file generation, actuator and sensor calibration, attitude determination Conceptual design studies for the operational flight dynamics system, operations preparation and planning Flight dynamics software test and maintenance Adaptation of algorithms to new and exotic space environments, adaptation to new interfaces and functional requirements, migration to new hardware andor operating systems. Development of test tools and analysis of test outcomes This is a fulltime position in Darmstadt, Germany with a planned starting date in November 2015. Qualifications Competencies Applicants shall have a university degree, in astrophysics, mathematics, space engineering or a closely related discipline or other suitable qualification. Previous work experience or background in space flight dynamics is not required for this position. Essential skills are Exceptional physical insight, combined with rapid execution and a practical and rigorous approach to problem solving Experience devising and realising mathematical algorithms to satisfy demanding scientific applications, ideally using Fortran, C and Matlab User level experience with the UNIX operating system fluency in English spoken and written, as English is the working language Desirable skills are Knowledge of space flight dynamics and spacecraft attitude determination and control subsystems Some experience in scripting with Unix tools Some experience with flight dynamics Familiarity with mission analysis approach including software tools at ESOC The position requires a great deal of independence and selfmotivation. Our client, based near Frankfurt in Germany, is responsible for establishing and operating weather forecasting and Earth observation satellite programmes with associated data telemetry and dissemination operations. One of their objectives is to contribute to the operational monitoring of the climate and the detection of global climate changes. They are seeking engineering consultancy support for the EPSSG EUMETSAT Polar System Second Generation Programme. Support is required in the area of verification and validation of the system which is composed of a Space Segment and a Ground Segment. The focus of the work is related to the definition and implementation of the approach to be applied for radio frequency RF testing of the EPSSG spacetoground interfaces and the planning of related activities, with all needed logistics for the execution of related tests. An associated task is in the area of requirements specification and development of needed test tools, such as RF suitcases. The Consultant shall have the following mandatory skills and experience University degree in the domain of engineering, physics or equivalent. At least 3 years of handson involvement in RF testing of spacetoground interfaces at satellite andor ground station level. Familiarity with procurement, installation, use and maintenance of relevant test equipment, such as RF suitcases. Handson experience with the preparation of test documentation test plans, specifications, procedures and reports. Desirable experience includes Involvement in the preparation and execution of tests at remote sites. Involvement in RF design related to spacetoground interfaces at satellite andor ground station level. Expertise in Kaband link design or testing. Experience in other areas of System VV, such as Satellite System Validation Tests i.e. validation of endtoend TMTC chains and of spacecraft operational procedures. The working language is English.
