Air Canada and WestJet Airlines Ltd. reported strong load factors in January, with both airlines filling 80.1 per cent of their available seat capacity last month.

Air NZ: Domestic and international fares to drop

Although he said prices were likely to drop "substantially", Mr Luxon said he was unable to put a figure on how much airfares could fall.

American Airlines plans to increase the number of fare classes it offers this year in a bid to prop up passenger unit revenue. The use of branded fares could help American compete with low-cost carriers such as Spirit Airlines, Frontier, and Virgin America, as well as Southwest Airlines in the hyper-competitive Dallas market, while still driving revenue growth through ancillary add-ons.

The lowest airfare between Sydney and Honolulu has fallen 40.3 per cent to $511 return over the last year. A review by Flight Centre of the lowest discount fares to popular destinations has revealed an average 14 per cent fall over the last 12 months amid capacity increases on many of the routes.
