The UK and Australia no longer have dedicated environmental protection ministries

Vice: The United Kingdom and Australia no longer have ministries dedicated to protecting the environment and fighting climate change, after both countries folded their environment portfolios in to other departments. That's leaving many worried that the two Commonwealth countries are stepping back in the fight against climate change. The cabinet reshuffles in both countries come after a wave of political instability that saw Australia narrowly re-elect Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, and the UK usher...

The damage wrought by acidic oceans hurts more than marine life and lasts longer than you think
2016-07-08 13:12:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
LA Times: A milky white cloud blooms in the Barents Sea, so vast it can be seen from space. It`s not the result of some toxic chemical spill or the sinking of a dairy-filled tanker - it`s the handiwork of millions of microscopic algae, doing what their kind have done for millions of years. The algae, Emiliania huxleyi, somewhat mysteriously produce ultra-thin scales made of chalk that surround their single-celled bodies. While it`s not exactly clear how the scales benefit the algae, scientists say...
Acid attack: Can mussels hang on for much longer?

ScienceDaily: Scientists from The University of Washington have found evidence that ocean acidification caused by carbon emissions can prevent mussels attaching themselves to rocks and other substrates, making them easy targets for predators and threatening the mussel farming industry. "A strong attachment is literally a mussel's lifeline" says Professor Emily Carrington, one of the lead researchers. Mussels attach themselves to hard surfaces so that they can filter plankton from seawater for food. They generally...
O2 UK no longer for sale - Telefonica
2016-06-30 08:41:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Telefonica has pulled out of plans to sell O2 UK, consolidating the unit back into its financial statements and no longer presenting it as discontinued operations, according to a filing submitted to Spanish markets regulator CNMV. The announcement comes after the European Commission earlier blocked Telefonica's GBP 10.3 billion sale of O2 to CK Hutchison due to competition concerns. However, Telefonica added that it "continues to explore different strategic alternatives for O2 UK, to be implemented when market conditions are right".
