Southwest Airlines files applications to serve Caribbean destinations from Houston

Southwest Airlines filed applications on Thursday with the US Department of Transportation requesting approval to serve six regional destinations with new, daily, nonstop service from William P. Hobby Airport in Houston. After receiving US government approval of the new service, Southwest will begin selling these flights, offering customers nonstop options between Houston and four destinations in Mexico -- Cancun, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, and San Jose del Cabo/Los Cabos -- as well as flights to San Jose, Costa Rica, and Belize City, Belize.

Telecommunication ministers from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States say the proposed acquisition by British telecommunications company, Cable and Wireless of Columbus Communications International, would result in the formation of a monopoly in the sub-region. According to the host Telecommunications Minister Dr James Fletcher, the meeting agreed that the merger would create a monopoly in the provision of fixed network services.
