Canada: Global warming threatens the backyard rink
2016-01-11 11:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
CBC: A Canadian tradition, the backyard rink, may be in trouble in the coming years in much of the country, including P.E.I. That's the conclusion of a group of geographers at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, which has been studying ice conditions in rinks since 2012. They're the founders of Rink Watch, a website that allows people to pin their rinks on a map, and then update ice conditions all winter. FedEx is threatening to move its massive information technology center out of Collierville, Tennessee, if the town government doesn't give the company millions of dollars worth of additional tax breaks over 20 years. Duncan, the town's director of economic development.

Reuters: Each winter, in the far reaches of Canada's north, a highway of ice built atop frozen lakes and tundra acts as a supply lifeline to remote diamond mines, bustling with traffic for a couple of months before melting away in the spring. This year, the world's busiest ice road is running late. Unseasonably warm weather has set back ice formation on the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road, named after the first and last of hundreds of lakes on the route. The road is still expected to open on schedule...

2015-12-20 05:04:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: Strapped for cash, Chesapeake Energy Corp cancelled its traditionally grand display of holiday lights this year, but like most oil and gas drillers it is still dreaming of a white Christmas. A mild North American winter could punish large drillers, especially gas giants like Chesapeake, by curbing seasonal demand for heating of homes and businesses and hurting prices. Energy companies, laden with debt and reeling from a 17-month collapse in oil prices, may now face their most critical few months...
