Location ESRIN, Frascati, Italy Description Vega Mechanical Systems Engineer in the Vega Launcher Stages Engineering, Vega and Space Rider Development Programmes, Space Transportation Development Department, Directorate of Space Transportation. Duties Under the authority of the Vega Launcher Stages Engineering Manager, the postholder will be involved in Vega development and exploitation activities. Under Vega Development, the range of activities encompasses the development of VegaC, VegaE and relevant Vega spinoffs, in the field of primary cold structures with particular focus on small spacecraft mission service SSMS dispenser activities. Specific responsibilities will include managing the technical activities related to the design, development, qualification, assembly, integration, testing, acceptance, flight and postflight of the mechanical systems within the abovementioned scope of activities main tasks include the following contributions to tradeoff analysis at mechanical systems level, in particular regarding subsystemsequipment layout, and recurrent and nonrecurrent cost aspects apportioning technical requirements from system level to mechanical subsystems, defining the relevant internal and external interface specifications, from launch system down to launcher system subsystems, launch base, and launch range drafting statements of work evaluating industrial offers, negotiating industrial contracts and evaluating industry deliverables preparing and implementing the main project milestones, including specific project reviews at system and subsystem levels, within the area of responsibility supporting the Vega Launcher Stages Engineering team in the design and qualification of structural elements of liquid propulsion systems tanks, vessels and solid rocket motor casing. Under Vega Exploitation, the range of activities encompasses technical management of the mechanical systems in Vega Production. Duties will notably include monitoring the manufacture and acceptance of Vega elements, ensuring compliance of the missionspecific configuration with the product qualification range technical guidance for dealing with flight anomaliesnonconformance and assessing requests for waiversdeviations assessing the evolving definition ECP of mechanical systems and their possible impact on the Vega launch vehicles qualification status following up the technical activities related to dealing with componentmaterial obsolescence and actions aimed at reducing recurrent costs during the exploitation phase. Education Applicants for this post should have a Masters degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering field, with a strong background in the design, development, assembly, integration, testing and acceptance of mechanical systems for space transportation applications. We are looking to recruit a Mechanical Engineer who can work within our Operations team to deliver Mechanical design solutions. Responsibilities will include Mechanical system and component design for use in nano and small satellites. Working in the mechanical engineering design team to develop mechanical and electromechanical components for use in a space environment. Active participation to all design phases including concept definition and elaboration, environment definition, thermal models generation, thermal analysis, detailed design, component selection, supply chain engagement, component testing and validation. Generation and review of data packages to the time and quality requirements of the company. Design of closely coupled integrated systems up to full spacecraft level. Work closely with the Manufacture Engineering team to design systems that are optimised for medium volume manufacture and test DfM, DfT. Skills required Minimum BEng Mechanical Engineering or suitable experience in lieu. A minimum of 5 years experience working with CAD Systems Solid Works, ProE or Catia. Demonstrable understanding of the application of risk analysis and design for manufacture techniques in a low to medium volume manufacturing environment. Have the ability to take concept ideas from nonengineering sources and translate these ideas into manufactureable products. Knowledge and experience of Hardware and System development processes, project scheduling, team and task management. Work with other members of the product development team to translate product requirements into engineering product specifications. Design and development of mechanical systems including layout design through to detailed design and evaluation. Detailed working knowledge of Configuration Management. Able to perform effectively under high workloads and be able to adapt to a rapidlychanging timecritical environment. Able to commit to the plan and deliver the expected results on time or to report proactively if any deviations are foreseen. Work in teams showing good interpersonal skills to coordinate with team members and key stakeholders as well as in cooperation with industry and partner agencies. Ability to write technical papers and training material for end users or other team members. Lead Teams of dedicated engineers to produce on time and on cost customer focused solutions to difficult requirement sets. Skills Desirable Knowledge of ESATANTMS or other thermal analysis SW packages would be highly advantageous. Experience of electronic assembly methods and the Mechanical design elements associated with this discipline. Space project experience, preferably with ESA or another major space agency or prime contractor or supplier. Knowledge of Space Engineering ECSS standards. Capability to tailor spacecraft engineering processes and standards i.e. ECSS, to meet the business requirements and customer compliance.
