BIO applauds bipartisan action by Senate Agriculture Committee to advance biotech food labeling solution as an alternative to costly and confusing patchwork of state laws. According to BIO's Brian Baenig, legislation seeks to establish clear, uniform standards for labeling of foods made with genetically modified organisms. This will help provide consumers with information about foods in the marketplace while keeping food costs low and protecting farmers' rights to use modern technologies.

The spread of the Zika virus in Latin America is giving a boost to a British biotech firm's proposal to deploy a genetically modified mosquito to try to stop transmission of the disease. Oxitec has genetically modified the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also transmits dengue and chikungunya, so the males produce offspring that do not live.

Advocates, lawmakers push GMO labeling of food and seeds

Consumer rights advocates are back at the Capitol to support a bill that would require GMO labeling on New York food. Republican Sen. Kenneth LaValle and Assembly Democrat Linda Rosenthal have proposed a bill that would require labeling of all food, seeds and agricultural products made from genetically modified organisms.
