Apple earlier this week cut the prices of its Retina MacBook Pro laptops by as much as 13 percent, a move one retail analyst said was driven in part by increased competition from higher-end Windows systems. On Tuesday, Apple refreshed its MacBook Pro line, reconfiguring the laptops with the latest Core i5 and Core i7 processors based on its Haswell architecture, replacing previous chipsets with an Intel graphics processor dubbed "Iris," and putting the new models on a modest diet.

At Apple's special October 22 event in San Francisco, the company has unveiled new MacBook Pros. As expected, the old 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros have finally been retired. Now the MacBook Pro will only come with a Retina display. Both the 13- and 15-inch models have been updated today, and both will begin shipping today as well. The entry-level 13-inch MBP with Retina display will cost $1300; the entry-level 15-inch MBP with integrated graphics will cost $2000.

Apple warns of SSD failures in MacBook Air, offers free replacements

Apple is warning customers that solid-state drives in some MacBook Airs are failing and is offering free replacements. The company said that 64GB and 128GB SSDs were failing in MacBook Air laptops sold between June 2012 and June 2013. The drives will be replaced free, the company said in webpage about the SSD recall.
