NIST Physicists create fundamentally accurate quantum thermometer.
2016-03-16 13:31:07| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Physicists at NIST discovered how to calibrate temperature measurements by monitoring motions of nanomechanical system governed by rules of quantum mechanics. While not yet ready for commercialization, method reveals how object's thermal energy can be precisely determined by observing its physical properties at quantum scale. Initial demonstration has absolute accuracy within few percentage points, and NIST approach works over temperature range encompassing cryogenic and room temperatures.

Advance made by researchers at NIST in roll-to-roll measurements may lead to manufacturers having accelerated and nondestructive way to test array of materials under real-world conditions. NIST physicists Nathan Orloff, Christian Long, and Jan Obrzut, adding to existing testing non-contact methods, measured properties of films by passing them through microwave cavity. Researchers also built electrical circuit to measure changes of film material.
NIST Net-Zero House quadruples energy surplus in second year.

Adjustments to ventilation and temperature control systems, along with one mild winter, helped net-zero-energy house at NIST quadruple surplus energy it sent to power grid during its second year-long demonstration. From February 1, 2015 to January 31, 2016, this 2-story, 4-bedroom house's rooftop solar power system generated 13,717 kW hr of electricity. This eliminated annual electricity bill of ~$3,670 and garnered ~$80 refund check from local utility for 2,139 kW-hr energy surplus.

NIST Report examines how cloud computing can assist the disabled.
2016-03-04 14:31:08| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
"Cloud Computing and Accessibility Considerations" explores difficulties employees with disabilities may encounter as organizations migrate to the cloud. In addition to providing 8 known challenges with new IT technology, draft publication from NIST Cloud Accessibility Public Working Group lists barriers specific to cloud-computing environments. Working identified potential accessibility barriers and how to prevent them and also developed cloud computing accessibility taxonomy/vocabulary.

NIST Method may find elusive flaws in medical implants.
2016-03-02 14:31:10| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
After years of effort by manufacturers and researchers, NIST and collaborators have demonstrated a nondestructive approach for detecting cracks in ceramic capacitors before they go bad. NIST crack-detection method relies on acoustic measurements at frequencies much higher than humans can hear. New technique may help prevent failures in medical devices such as cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators and also avert electronics failures in satellites and other spacecraft.
