According to the Australian media, national operator Telstra is in talks to purchase Digicel’s telco operations in the South Pacific, which include Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Nauru, Samoa, Tonga, and Vanuatu. Iliad confirms JV with Digicel for mobile coverage in French overseas territories

(Telecompaper) Iliad's subsidiary Free and Digicel have announced the creation of a joint venture company, confirming recent press reports. The partnership supports their common objective of increasing the number of mobile cell sites in the French Antilles (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Barthelemy and Saint-Martin) and in French Guiana. The two groups said that the JV has the long-term ambition to invest in one of the largest telecom infrastructure networks in the region. Free and Digicel will be fully independent from a commercial perspective, with no impact on their spectrum licences and core network operations.

Digicel files for bankruptcy under debt restructuring plan

(Telecompaper) Caribbean-focused operator Digicel has filed for bankruptcy court reorganisation as part of its plan to reduce debt, cut financing costs and extend debt maturities, reports ABC News, citing company spokesman Pat Walsh. "It is business as usual," said Walsh, adding that the Chapter 15 filing in New York would not affect operations in the 32 markets that the company serves from its headquarters in Jamaica. A hearing in the Chapter 15 bankruptcy case is scheduled for June, added the report.
