BT calls for Ofcom to tackle Sky pay-TV dominance

2015-07-10 10:07:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) BT Consumer CEO John Petter has called on Ofcom to formally amend the scope of its Digital Communications Review to include pay-TV. He cites high prices and poor outcomes for consumers resulting from a lack of competition in the UK pay-TV market. Speaking to the Broadcasting Press Guild, Petter compared the falling prices, increasing speeds and strong international performance of the UK broadband market with the high prices and bad outcomes suffered by UK consumers in pay-TV. He rejected Sky's calls for BT to be broken up, saying they were a 'smokescreen' designed to cover up major failings in the pay-TV market. BT believes Sky pay-TV customers are paying around GBP 50 a year more than the EU average for basic pay-TV channels and possibly more than GBP 75 a year more if they subscribe to premium sports and movie packages.
