Australia challenges Google, Facebook market power, calls for increased consumer choice

(Telecompaper) The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) reports that it is concerned with the large amount and variety of data which digital platforms such as Google and Facebook collect on Australian consumers, which go beyond the data which users actively provide when using the digital platform. Research commissioned as part of the inquiry indicates consumers are concerned about the extent and range of information collected by digital platforms, the Commission added. The ACCC is in particular concerned about the length, complexity and ambiguity of online terms of service and privacy policies, including click-wrap agreements with take-it-or-leave-it terms.

Facebook and Google have manipulated users into sharing data using so-called "dark patterns," according to a report from the Norwegian Consumer Council. The practices nudged users toward accepting privacy options that favored the tech companies rather than themselves, the NCC found. Facebook and Google have no intention of providing users with an actual choice, the NCC has claimed.

Google, Facebook face first complaints under EU GDPR by Schrems group NOYB

(Telecompaper) The data protection group NOYB (None of your business) has filed the first complaints under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation, which took effect on 25 May. The group backed by privacy activist Max Schrems filed cases with national data protection regulators against Google (Android) in France, Instagram in Belgium, WhatsApp in Germany and Facebook in Austria over so-called 'forced consent', where users are required to allow access to their personal data in order to use the services.

After I considered Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's testimony before Senate and House committee hearings last week, it became very clear to me -- and I expect many in Congress -- that social media companies need to be regulated. However, I think this is only a step in the path that governments -- and I do mean more than the U.S. -- will take to ensure their effectiveness and protect their people.
