The Chief had engine trouble in the desert, so author Lois Herr's Kansas City boarding was delayed as the Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight engine pulled the passenger train into the station. For their 1923 train journey, my mother, Kathryn, and her grandmother, Rebecca, planned two Oklahoma visits - one to Millers and one to Carl, a young preacher who very much wanted Kathryn to be his wife.
