(Telecompaper) Spain's industry ministry has announced that a total of eleven islands have submitted applications to the "Smart Islands" tender open to local governments on any of the Balearic or Canary Islands. The total cost of the proposed projects is EUR 69.4 million, well over double the EUR 30 million allocated to the tender, with ICT development agency Red.es now tasked with selecting the smart city plans that best meet the objectives of contributing to the improvement of public services and mitigating the negative effects of insularity. The islands that have submitted bids are Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
