MTG Lightning Imager Data Processing Consultant mf Terma The hightech and innovative Terma Group develops products and systems for defense, nondefense and security applications, including command and control systems, radar systems, selfprotection systems for aircraft and vessels, space technology, and aerostructures for the aircraft industry. Terma is headquartered at Aarhus, Denmark. Internationally, Terma has subsidiaries and operations in The Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, India, Singapore and the U.S. The Space Business Area contributes with missioncustomized software and hardware products including power systems and star trackers as well as services to support a number of inorbit pioneering European scientific and Earth observation satellite missions. Additionally, Terma is contracted for the development and delivery of software and hardware systems and services for numerous ongoing and future European, and international missions. Terma Space operates out of Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany, and the UK. Job description For our customer, EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, Germany, we are seeking an Lightning Imager data processing consultant to support the Meteosat Third Generation MTG programme. The MTG system will include three satellites, two MTGI imaging satellites and one MTGS sounder satellite. Each MTGI will have an imaging radiometer, the Flexible Combined Imager FCI, and a lightning detection instrument, the Lightning Imager LI. The MTG LI instrument is based on detecting short transient events against a dark night time or bright day time background. The detected events are registered by the LI instrument when something resembling a lightning signal has been detected. The triggered event can be a real lightning event or a false event. A false event is defined as a LI triggered event occurring in the absence of a lightning optical pulse, which may have a range of causes including spacecraft motion microvibrations, space environment particle transients protons, heavy ions, etc., electronics noise, thermo mechanical noise, and solar glint. The onground data processing for the LI instrument is split in 2 steps the Level 01b data processing from raw instrument data into geophysically calibrated data and the Level 12 data processing into data products for the LI data users groups, flashes, etc.. The Level 01b data processing includes various correction steps algorithms related to corrections for detector effects, electronic effects, radiometric effects, quality flagging aspects, as well as algorithms related to triggered event filtering flagging and Image Navigation and Registration INR geolocation. Responsibilities In general, the tasks will be towards the provision of support to the LI onground data processing development, with a strong emphasis on all the 01b data processing aspects. You will be integrated into the Instrument Functional Chain Engineering IFCE group of the MTG System Engineering team, and report to the LI instrument system engineer. You will also work closely together with people from the Remote Sensing and Products Division RSP within EUMETSAT that work on the LI. Your activities will include support to the MTG programme for the LI instrument in the following areas Support the development and evaluation of detector, electronic, radiometric, quality flagging, performance and calibration degradation correction and monitoring algorithms detector, electronics and optical and all other algorithms relevant for the LI 01b data processing. For INR geolocation algorithmssupport from LI side towards algorithms provided by other sources is anticipated Support the development and evaluation of appropriate LI triggered event filtering flagging algorithms for 01b and 12 data processing, with emphasis on the 01b data processing Support the development of prototype software code for the purposes of testing and verification of the developed LI 01b algorithms Support the development of a reference processor for LI, from level0 to level1b, within EUMETSAT Provision of an Algorithm Theoretical Baseline Document ATBD for the LI 01b processing Support to the generation of associated documentation including technical reports, etc. Participation in the LI Instrument Functional Chain Engineering IFCE group Conducting and supporting external studies relevant for and related to the above activities, and analysing and evaluating the study results. Note Evaluation of algorithms involves both the review of the information derived from the ESA led LI space segment contract and alternative sources of information. This is a fulltime position with a planned starting date in Q1 2016. You will be nominally based at EUMETSATs facilities in Darmstadt, Germany, but travel within Europe may be required for certain tasks. Qualifications Competencies In addition to having a technical university degree in Physics or a related subject for example space and satellite engineering, you shall be in possession of the following mandatory skills Demonstrable familiarity with satellite instruments characteristics for Earth observation in the visiblenear infrared range of the spectrum and with their Level 01b calibration, as well as with relating physics processes in such satellite instruments to the relevant Level 01b data processing algorithms required to provide geophysically calibrated level1b data Solid background in software engineering Capable of working both individually and independently on assigned responsibilities, as well as in the LI MTG team where necessary Ability to write concise and comprehensive scientific and technical reports Good interpersonal and communication skills Fluency in English spoken and written is mandatory, as English is the working language. The following skills are considered an advantage Experience with scientific instrument data simulation, Level 01b data processing software development and prototypingtesting such software, for satellite instruments for earth observation Experience in software development in a Linux andor Unix environment in CC Experience with the latest software development tools and methods Experience with specification, design and coding of 01b data processing systems for earthobserving satellite instrumentation Experience with software prototyping tools e.g. Python, IDL and software build environments and tools e.g. make, imake What can Terma offer At Terma, we consider skilled employees, enthusiasm and job satisfaction as the very foundation of our success and as a prerequisite for the development of the bestinclass solutions that Terma provides.
