Optical Mechanical Design Engineer Job Ref 664 Key Purpose of Job Reports to SSTL are looking for motivated, dynamic and organised engineer with a high attention to detail and excellent technical knowledge to help shape and influence current and future flight optical instruments. You will be responsible for supporting the mechanical design, analysis and build of new optical instrument subsystems from concept through to ground verification testing and flight whilst working closely with lead optical system and principal optical mechanical engineers. You will report to the Optical Mechanical Design Assembly Team Leader. Key Tasks Working within project teams providing support to senior optical mechanical design engineers to develop working designs for optical systems to meeting the requirements set by the optical, electronic and systems engineers. Optical mechanical system design from initial concept to detailed final design using 3D modelling. Undertake thermal, static and dynamic structural and optical element surface deflection analysis of components and at system level in collaboration with the Senior Mechanical Analyst. Complete manufacturing drawings to enable the designs to be manufactured Undertake preparation and integration of the mechanical components in the clean rooms and support environmental testing. Maintain a design log and write build instructions, summarising each step in the design, development test process. Plan test campaigns, conduct manage tests, analyse and present results Management of Work Packages including, detailed project planning, budgeting, report writing, support to design and customer reviews Develop the Bill of Materials to allow the MRP system to reflect the completed instrument PERSON SPECIFICATION Qualifications A good 1st Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent ideally with Proven related optical or precision mechanical instrument experience Experience Demonstrated experience of the design, build and ideally test of precision mechanical systems, preferably as applied to spacecraft optical payloads. Relevant experience in some or all of the following areas is essential Mounting optical components, lenses, mirrors, prisms, filters, detectors etc, kinematic mounting principles Materials properties knowledge and manufacturing processes Mechanical design using 3D CAD ideally solid works Precision Assembly, Integration and test FE analysis Technical report writing and presentation preparation Customer and supplier liaison Quality management and product assurance understanding Experience of mechanical and environmental testing Knowledge Skills Comprehensive knowledge of Mechanical Engineering, ideally applied to optical space applications, coupled with a working knowledge of other engineering disciplines e.g. electronics, electrooptical, systems. Knowledge and experience of other spacecraft systems would be an advantage with the ability to grasp new technical concepts quickly. Outstanding interpersonal and team working skills with proven effective communication and customer interaction is essential Attention to detail is paramount to ensure that the finished subsystems will function as designed Competent use of CAD SolidWorks, for 3D part and assembly modelling as well as a good knowledge of drawing practice including tolerances A good understanding of the principles and practices of FEA with experience packages such as ANSYS Workbench or similar Competent in MS Office suite, MATLAB Good management, people and presentation skills Willing to be accountable and take responsibility to deliver a high standard of work Able to be flexible to changing work demands and able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
