SPICA is an Mclass ESA mission and has been selected for a 3 year study phase. SRON, in its role as Principal Investigator, is responsible for the SAFARI instrument onboard SPICA. SAFARI is a grating spectrometer with bolometers read out by Transition Edge Sensors operating at cryogenic temperatures. For the study team we are hiring a Senior Research Scientist fm Vacancy 1425 Job summary The successful candidate will be member of the Systems Engineering Team. The SAFARI Systems Engineering Team is an international team consisting of experts within different disciplines. This team leads the development of the SAFARI Instrument, defines the requirements, and collaborates with development teams across Europe, US and Taiwan. The main task of the candidate will be to analyze the overall endtoend instrument performance, with an emphasis on the effects of detector behavior on the overall science data calibration. Important aspects for this are detector nonlinearity, temporal response, effects of thermal drift and impact of cosmic rays. Besides this task the candidate will also contribute to other thermal, electrical and optical issues of the instrument that have to be addressed within the Systems Engineering Team during the phase A study. Tasks Analyze the influence of nonideal Transition Edge Sensor detector performance on the calibration of the SAFARI instrument Contribute to optical, mechanical, electrical, and thermal design studies during the instrument phase A study. Required qualifications PhD in Physics or Optics or equivalent in a discipline related to remote sensing e.g. Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Astronomy 3 years of experience in developing innovative opticalinfrared instrumentation and endtoend calibration Good verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment. Employment conditions Employment of this fulltime position as a senior instrument scientist at SRONGroningen is by NWO The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and will be for a period of 2 years with the possibility for a permanent position. If you have shown to perform well at SRON, there is ample opportunity to continue your career. The salary will be in accordance with the salary scales of NWOI, which will be between 46.000,00 and 87.000,00 gross per year, highly depending on your work experience.
