HE Space is a successful international space company. For over 30 years, we have been supporting our customers with qualified experts in the field of engineering, science and administration. We are currently looking for a Senior Support Scientist for XMMNewton Operations to support our customer in Spain. Senior Support Scientist for XMMNewton Operations Key Tasks and Responsibilities The XMMNewton Science Operation Centre XMMSOC at the European Space Astronomy Centre ESAC currently operates the scientific instruments on board XMMNewton. Starting from reception of the observers proposal to the final delivery of calibrated scientific products to the observer, the activities of the SOC comprise all the necessary steps for ensuring high quality and reliability of the scientific data. This includes daybyday operations, calibration of the instruments, user support and scientific research. Your main tasks will include Calibration and monitoring of the health and performance of the scientific instruments Optimisation to the observations of accepted proposals Shortterm mission planning and scheduling of routine observations as well as of Targets of Opportunity Provision of a helpdesk service Contribution to the Scientific Analysis Subsystem SAS scientific validation and provision of occasional input to the SAS Original science research using mainly XMMNewton or related data. Skills Experience You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience Required experience Ph.D. degree in a relevant science area, with preference for astronomy or physics Strong background in astronomical research, with a good record of science publications in the astronomical refereed literature and with part of those signed by the candidate as first author Astronomical Xray data analysis Astronomical spectroscopic data analysis Good command of commonly used astronomical software, like IDL, and of Xray astronomical data analysis software in particular, with preference to the XMMNewton SAS and the XSPEC and FTOOLs Fluency in English is mandatory knowledge of another European language is an advantage. Preferred experience Very good knowledge of the XMMNewton instruments Monitoring and calibration of astronomical Xray detectors Monitoring and calibration of opticalUV detectors used in space astronomy Scientific or spacecraft operations support with a major international space or ground based observatory Support to the professional astronomical community This job is located near Madrid.
