Pemberton, a respected pharmacist, chemist and former lieutenant colonel of the Confederate Army's Third Georgia Cavalry Battalion, never had much luck selling the drugs he manufactured, despite holding numerous patents. One such example is a patent medicine he created called French Wine Coca, an alcoholic beverage mixed with coca, kola nut and damiana.
