A Closer Look at Melting Ice in the Andes and Antarctica

2013-01-23 18:03:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

New York Times: Fascinating new studies of two of the world`s regions with accelerated melting, the Antarctic Peninsula and the Andes, are worth a closer look: One paper, published in The Cyrosphere, finds that glaciers throughout the tropical Andes have been melting in the last 30 years at a faster rate than at any time since the peak of the "little ice age" 300 years ago. Here`s a direct link: "Current state of glaciers in the tropical Andes: a multi-century perspective on glacier evolution and climate change."...

Massive melting of Andes glaciers

2013-01-23 12:50:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: Glaciers in the tropical Andes have shrunk by an average of 30-50% since the 1970s, according to a study. The glaciers, which provide fresh water for tens of millions in South America, are retreating at their fastest rate in the past 300 years. The study included data on about half of all Andean glaciers and blamed the melting on an average temperature rise of 0.7C from 1950-1994. Details appear in the academic journal Cryosphere. The authors report that glaciers are retreating everywhere...

Unprecedented Glacial Melting In Andes Blamed On Global Warming

2013-01-22 22:18:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

RedOrbit: Only four months ago and a continent away, researchers were looking into the varying degrees of ice accumulation and ablation within the Himalayan glacial system. In that report, published by the National Research Council (NRC), the team concluded that glacial melt could pose significant issues for the native populations that depend on the water runoff from these glaciers for their day-to-day lives. An international team of scientists from Europe, South America and the U.S. has turned its focus...

Climate change melting glaciers in the Andes

2013-01-22 18:44:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Mongabay: Glaciers are melting faster than ever in the tropical Andes, warns a new study published in The Cryosphere, which puts the blame for vanishing glaciers squarely on climate change. The study - the most comprehensive to date - found that since the 1970s glacier melt in the region has been speeding up, threatening freshwater supplies in Peru and Bolivia. "The ongoing recession of Andean glaciers will become increasingly problematic for regions depending on water resources supplied by glacierised...

Unprecedented glacier melting in the Andes blamed on climate change

2013-01-22 11:00:00| LifeSciencesWorld

[NEWS] Contact: Barbara Ferreira media@egu.eu 49-892-180-6703 European Geosciences Union Glaciers in the tropical Andes have been retreating at increasing rate since the 1970s, scientists write in the most comprehensive review to date of Andean glacier observations. The researchers blame the melting on rising temperatures as the region has warmed about 0.7&#17…
