Coral Reef Restoration Cheap, Effective Way of Saving Coastlines; Researchers Say
2014-05-14 15:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Nature World: Saving coral reefs could be an efficient and cheaper way of saving world's coastlines, a new study has found. Coral reefs are delicate ecosystems and provide shelter to 25 percent of all marine organisms. The latest study found that these reefs can act as the "tough guy" against waves and can dissipate around 97 percent of the wave energy. Researchers used data from 27 previous studies conducted in different regions around the world, from coasts that see normal waves to hurricane level waves....

In The Long Run, Rebuilding Coastlines Could Prove Too Costly
2013-10-27 05:53:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
National Public Radio: One year ago Tuesday, Hurricane Sandy bore down on the East Coast, devastating shoreline communities from Florida to Maine. Many of these areas have been rebuilt, including the Long Beach boardwalk, about 30 miles outside New York City. Officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new boardwalk Friday. Ninety percent of the funding for the restoration came from the federal government. The Federal Emergency Management Agency paid $44 million to repair the devastation. Jack and Roseanne Vanderbeck...
Hawaii Coastlines on Track to Lose 100 Feet of Beach
2013-09-08 00:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Environmental News Network: Hawaii is known for it's pristine beaches and it's 750 miles of coastline. However with looming sea water rise due to melting ice caps and climate change, a new study by the University of Hawaii shows the state is on pace to lose 100 feet of beach in the coming decades. According to the study, Maui beaches are most at risk as the sea-level rise is approximately 65% higher compared to the island of Oahu. While many beaches have been faced with erosion for years, predictions show that beaches will...
Migrating ocean microbe may help protect coastlines

Scientific American: From butterflies to lobsters, climate change is expected to spur migration of species, with potentially devastating consequences for ecosystems and economies. But in the case of a one-celled organism dwelling in the oceans named Amphisteginid foraminifera, a change in its habitat may lessen the devastation to some coastlines at risk from erosion and powerful storms. In a new study, scientists report that the discus-shaped creatures are likely to shift their ocean range by hundreds of miles...

US Coastlines' Climate Change Vulnerability Underscored In New Report
2013-01-29 23:23:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Huffington Post: No part of the U.S. will escape the harsh consequences of climate change, which has already begun to cause trouble from Alaska to Florida, and from Maine to Hawaii, and which will worsen as the century goes on. But according to a report released January 28, the nations coastlines -- Atlantic, Gulf, Pacific and Great Lakes -- are likely to get the worst of it. The reason, said Virginia Burkett, a coastal wetland ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and one of the reports two lead authors,...
