In a groundbreaking study that offers new hope for women with advanced breast cancer, researchers from UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have published final clinical trial results that showed the amount of time patients were on treatment without their cancer worsening was effectively doubled in women with advanced breast cancer who took the experimental drug palbociclib. An investigational drug discovered and being developed by Pfizer Inc., palbociclib targets a key family of proteins responsible for cell growth by preventing them from dividing.

UTSA receives NIH grant to develop bioinformatics tools to find cause of breast cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers, and about one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. The National Institutes of Health recently awarded a $1.08 million grant to The University of Texas at San Antonio to combine computational modeling with biological information to advance our understanding of what may cause breast cells to become cancerous.

Oncothyreon makes breast cancer drug deal with Array, stock surges Friday

Oncothyreon Inc. on Friday said it made a licensing deal with Array BioPharma Inc. regarding a breast cancer drug that received "positive preliminary data" in two recent trials, and its shares rose sharply on the news. In the licensing deal for ONT-380, Oncothyreon will pay Array $20 million upfront and up to $280 million in possible milestone payments.

Myriad Genetics, Inc. has announced results from a new study that demonstrated the ability of the myRisk Hereditary Cancer test to detect 105 percent more mutations in cancer causing genes than conventional BRCA testing alone. The Company also presented two key studies in triple negative breast cancer that show the myChoice HRD test accurately predicted response to platinum-based therapy in patients with early-stage TNBC and that the BRACAnalysis molecular diagnostic test significantly predicted response to platinum-based drugs in patients with metastatic TNBC.
