Retreating crude oil prices are also largely to blame for the decline in Linn Energy's valuation, which fell more than 63% in the last year.

Linn Energy LLC said Friday that it will cut its payouts to shareholders by more than half as the oil and natural-gas producer slashes capital spending to weather lower oil prices. The move marks the first time Linn has cut its dividend-like payments since going public in 2006, and comes after its stock fell 69% over the last six months of 2014.
