Exxon Valdez Spill Had Big Impact on Fish Population, Study Says
2015-09-09 14:41:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Al Jazeera: Federal scientists may have found a link between the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill and a decline of herring and pink salmon populations in Prince William Sound. In a study published Tuesday in the online journal Scientific Reports, researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) found that embryonic salmon and herring exposed to even very low levels of crude oil can develop heart defects. Herring and pink salmon juveniles that were exposed to crude oil as embryos grew...

Federal scientists have determined that extremely low levels of crude oil spilled by the Exxon Valdez caused heart problems in embryonic fish, a conclusion that could shape how damage is assessed in other major spills. In a study published Tuesday in the online journal Scientific Reports, researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found that embryonic herring and salmon exposed to low levels of crude oil developed misshapen hearts.

Too warm, too few fish: Health warning for worlds oceans
2015-08-23 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Climate News Network: The worlds oceans covering nearly two-thirds of the Earths surface, and on which much of human life depends are under severe pressure, a report says. Over-fishing has dramatically reduced fish stocks. The thousands of tonnes of rubbish dumped in the oceans wreak havoc on marine life, while climate change is warming and acidifying them, putting them under further stress. These are the sobering conclusions of a wide-ranging study of the Earths ecosystems by the Worldwatch Institute, a...
