A contractor for the Steel Dynamics mill in Columbus is paying a $61,867 civil fine for environmental violations relating to hazardous waste and emergency readiness. Siemens Industry Metal Technologies agreed to pay the fine to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

Fort Smith, AR to Upgrade Sewer System to resolve CWA violations.

U.S. EPA, U.S. Department of Justice, and state of Arkansas announced that Fort Smith, AR will upgrade its sewer collection and treatment system over 12 years to reduce discharges of raw sewage and other pollutants into local waterways. Expected expenses, in addition to routine operation/maintenance, are estimated at $255 million. Also under settlement, Fort Smith will pay $300,000 civil penalty and spend $400,000 to help low-income areas repair and replace privately owned sewer network portions.

Safeway to pay $9.87 million as settlement of environmental violations

Alameda County Superior Court Judge Wynne S. Carvill has ordered Pleasanton-based Safeway Inc. to pay $9.87 million as part of a settlement of a civil environmental prosecution. Alameda County District Attorney Nancy E. O'Malley said 42 other California district attorneys and two city attorneys were involved with her office in the investigation of the unlawfully handling and disposal of various hazardous wastes and materials over a 7-1/2-year period by Safeway and Safeway-owned stores.
