Strong US dollar hurts Q2 profits of Switzerland's Novartis

Swiss-based pharmaceutical company Novartis says second-quarter net income dropped 32 percent over the same quarter last year, brought down primarily by poor performance from associated companies and negative effects of a strong U.S. dollar. Second-quarter net income was $1.856 billion, down from $2.723 billion in the same quarter in 2014.

Novartis AG said on Tuesday its second-quarter profit fell 32% from the same period last year, as the Swiss drug giant was hit by a strengthened dollar and a weak result from its eye-care treatment business. Basel-based Novartis said net income fell to $1.86 billion, or $0.77 per share in the quarter ended in June, compared with $2.72 billion a year earlier.

Novartis announced today that the US Food and Drug Administration has approved Entresto tablets, previously known as LCZ696, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in patients with chronic heart failure and reduced ejection fraction . It is usually administered in conjunction with other heart failure therapies, in place of an ACE inhibitor or other angiotensin receptor blocker .

" Swiss drug manufacturer Novartis says it is buying Spinifex Pharmaceuticals, a U.S.-based biotechnology company that specializes in developing treatments for chronic pain. Novartis didn't disclose financial details Monday of the agreement to buy privately held Spinifex, which has its headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, and an office in Melbourne, Australia.
