Applied Materials Inc. - a company that makes the machines that make computer chips - reported Thursday a 58 percent rise in fourth-quarter profits but the company's projections for the next quarter fell short of what analysts expected. The California-based technology company that employs about 2,500 workers in Austin posted a profit of $290 million, or 23 cents per share, on revenue of $2.2 billion.
