Monsanto says 'expert panel' to review WHO finding on cancer link to herbicide

Monsanto Co, maker of one of the world's most widely used herbicides Roundup, said Tuesday that a panel of scientific experts will review the findings of a World Health Organization cancer research unit that found the key ingredient in Roundup is "probably carcinogenic to humans." The WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer's said in March that it came to the conclusion that the key ingredient known as glyphosate was probably cancer-causing after reviewing a range of scientific literature.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has formed a commission to study workplace safety regulations for the oil and gas industry and to recommend improvements. Tomblin issued an executive order on Wednesday forming the West Virginia Commission on Oil and Natural Gas Industry Safety.

Environmentalists argued Thursday that government regulators have allowed California's last operating nuclear power plant to sidestep federal rules and conceal the risk of earthquakes that could threaten its twin reactors. Officials for owner Pacific Gas and Electric Co., meanwhile, said the Diablo Canyon plant is safe and the company is operating within its government licenses.
