MONSANTO TO BUILD ITS FIRST SEED PLANT IN RUSSIA Jan. 23, 2015 Source: Yahoo Finance Monsanto , the world's largest seed company, plans to open its first plant in Russia in coming years, stepping up its activities in the world's fourth largest grain producer as it seeks to counter the effects of a plunging rouble. The rouble has almost halved in value against the dollar in the past year, hit by falling oil prices, a crumbling economy and political tensions, making local production more attractive.

Monsanto Earnings Drop On Lower Corn Seed Sales, Agricultural Headwinds

Seed manufacturer Monsanto reported a sharp decline in first quarter earnings Wednesday, pointing to lower corn seed sales in South America and current headwinds in agriculture. Net profit was down 34% to $243 million, or 50 cents per share, compared to $368 million, or 69 cents per share, a year ago.

Monsanto said Wednesday that its earnings fell 34 percent in its first fiscal quarter as South American farmers cut back on planting corn, reducing demand for the company's biotech-enhanced seeds. U.S. farmers harvested record crops of soybeans and corn last year, sending prices on those food staples to their lowest levels in years.

In November 2013, Chinese ports began rejecting US imports saying they were tainted with a GMO Syngenta corn variety, called Agrisure Viptera, which is approved in the US, but not in China . Grain traders Cargill and Archer Daniels Midland , along with dozens of farmers, have sued Syngenta for damages after Beijing rejected Viptera shipments, saying the seed maker misrepresented how long it would take to win Chinese approval.
