Ohio families drop cancer cluster suit against Whirlpool

Families whose children have been among dozens sickened in a northern Ohio cancer cluster have dropped their federal lawsuit against Whirlpool Corp. The families asked this past week to drop the suit linking Whirlpool's washing machine factory in Clyde to the cancer cases. An attorney involved in the case says the owners of contaminated land once owned by Whirlpool plan to continue with their part of the lawsuit.

Several Clyde-area residents who blamed a documented rise in eastern Sandusky County childhood cancer cases on contamination from Whirlpool Corp., have voluntarily withdrawn lawsuits they had filed against the company in U.S. District Court, according to a court record posted online late Tuesday. Whirlpool, which has maintained its innocence, said in a prepared statement that it "welcomes dismissal of this lawsuit and is respectful of the families involved."

Oncolytics Biotech Inc. , a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on the development of oncolytic viruses as potential cancer therapeutics, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted Orphan Drug Designation for its lead product candidate, REOLYSIN, for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. REFILE-UPDATE 1-FDA approves Eisai's thyroid cancer drug

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it approved Japan's Eisai Co Ltd's drug to treat the most common form of thyroid cancer more than two months ahead of the review date. The drug, Lenvima, was cleared for use in patients with progressive, differentiated thyroid cancer who have not adequately responded to radioactive iodine therapy, the agency said on Friday.
