To reduce health impacts and encourage economic revitalization, EPA added 2 hazardous waste sites that pose risks to human health and environment to National Priorities List (NPL) of Superfund sites. EPA also proposes adding 6 more sites. According to EPA's Mathy Stanislaus, "Superfund cleanups help advance the economic well-being of communities by turning contaminated properties into productive community resources that can enhance property values, create jobs and broaden tax bases."

They are located in Elkhart, IN; Houma, LA; Newark, NJ; Harleysville, PA; and Bennington VT. In addition, agency is proposing to add 3 additional sites to the list. These include Birmingham AL; Kokomo, IN; and Gibraltar, MI. Superfund program investigates and cleans up the most complex, uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites in the country.
