With the impending launch of the Xbox One, it seems that Microsoft is gearing up to make the new version of the Kinect actually work as advertised this time around. Supposedly, the next-gen Kinect is capable of understanding two people at the same time. It sounds very impressive, but it remains to be seen if this will lead towards exciting new kinds of games, or if it's all just doubletalk.

Sony has used its stage at the Tokyo Game Show to confirm that the PS4 will have voice and gesture control, similar to the Xbox One and Kinect, assuming your console is hooked up to the next-gen PlayStation camera, aka the PS4 Eye. This isn't the kind of bombshell that we could've expected from the Tokyo Game Show of yore, but it's still the biggest nugget of news that we've had from the TGS in recent memory.

In a sad move that sacrifices the last vestiges of its creative vision, Microsoft has backed down on the Xbox One's mandatory Kinect. Despite its initially very vehement protestations about the importance of an always-on, always-watching, always-listening Kinect, Microsoft now says that the Xbox One will continue to work when Kinect isn't plugged in.

Voice commands are de rigueur these days with products like Siri and Google Glass, but what about people who can't speak? Sign language is the easiest way for many deaf people to communicate, but it has been difficult for computers to readily understand this complex form of communication until recently. Now, researchers in China are using Microsoft's Kinect for Windows SDK to actively translate sign language into written text.
