AT&T, CenturyLink receive millions of dollars for rural Internet push

In Arkansas, AT&T and CenturyLink split the lion's share of the federal bounty from the Connect America program, almost equally dividing some $40 million from the $54 million that went to telecoms with operations in Arkansas, including Little Rock-based Windstream. The Federal Communications Commission recently announced that telecom carriers in Arkansas will receive more than $54 million from the Connect America Fund to provide broadband services in rural and remote areas of the state with little or no high-speed Internet access.

CenturyLink to cut 55 in Louisiana

CenturyLink says dozens of positions will be reduced in Louisiana as part of the company's proposal to eliminate 1,000 jobs companywide. Annmarie Sartor tells The News-Star the company will cut the headcount in Louisiana by about 55 positions.

CenturyLink to deploy broadband to rural areas in 33 states

Telecom carrier CenturyLink will roll out broadband to 1.2 million U.S. homes and businesses in rural areas, using US $506 million from the Federal Communications Commission. The six-year project, expected to start early next year, covers rural areas in 33 states, including large parts of the Midwest, West and Southeast, in addition to other areas.

CenturyLink cuts jobs in Colorado

The Denver Post's Tamara Chuang reports that the local cuts represent 2.5 percent of the telecom's Colorado workforce of about 5,850. Monroe, Louisiana-based CenturyLink confirmed last month that it was cutting 1,000 positions out of 44,000 companywide, but at the time it didn't specify how many Colorado workers were affected.

CenturyLink lays off 150 workers in Colorado

CenturyLink confirmed Wednesday that it has laid off about 150 workers in Colorado, or 2.5 percent of its workforce in the state. The Monroe, La.-based telecom - which offers phone, Internet and pay-TV services - said the cuts, which are part of 1,000 companywide, were an effort to manage expenses.
