An executive for Takata Corp., the company that produced faulty air bags linked to the deaths of motorists, apologized at a U.S. Senate hearing as two lawmakers told of a sixth fatality they say is also related. "We are deeply sorry and anguished about each of the reported instances in which a Takata air bag has not performed as designed and a driver or passenger has suffered personal injuries or death," Hiroshi Shimizu, senior vice president in charge of global quality assurance, said in testimony today to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

Two U.S. senators on Wednesday raised the possibility of a sixth fatality linked to potentially lethal Takata Corp air bags, as they announced a news conference to introduce the sister of someone who died in an Arizona accident in 2003. So far, five fatalities, in Virginia, Oklahoma, Florida, California and Malaysia, have been linked to faulty Takata air bag inflators.

Takata Corp and Honda Motor Co were hit Monday with a lawsuit over an air bag linked to the death last month of a woman in Florida, the latest legal issue for the companies as they continue to recall millions of vehicles for the faulty part. The family of Hien Tran filed a wrongful-death lawsuit in state court in Orange County, Florida, according to the family's lawyer, Henry Didier.

Honda Motor Co said on Thursday that a driver in Malaysia had died after a July accident involving an air bag supplied by Takata Corp, and widened its recall for the defective air bags by another 170,000 vehicles. In the fatal accident, involving a 2003 Honda City model, the air bag inflator ruptured and sent shrapnel into the vehicle, some of which struck the driver, Honda said, adding it was not clear whether the woman driver was killed by the air bag explosion or another cause, citing a local police report.
