Google Pays $2.1 Billion to Get Fit(bit)

Google has inked a deal to buy wearable fitness device maker Fitbit for $2.1 billion. The acquisition will give Google an immediate leading position in the wearables market, able to compete against the likes of Apple and Samsung rather than having to build up market share from scratch. Fitbit's products are carried in approximately 39,000 retail stores in more than 100 countries around the world.

Smartwatch shipments leap 67% in Q3, with Fitbit jumping into 2nd place behind Apple

(Telecompaper) Global smartwatch shipments leaped 67 percent year-on-year in the third quarter to 10 million units, according to the latest study from Strategy Analytics. The number was at 6.0 million the year before. Apple Watch maintained its top position with a worldwide market share of 45 percent, with Fitbit jumping into second place, overtaking Samsung and Garmin.

Fitbit and Google ink healthcare cooperation deal for wearables

Fitbit CEO James Park said the cooperation will push the pace of innovation and define the next generation of healthcare and wearables. Under the deal, Fitbit will move to Google's new Cloud Healthcare API and Google Cloud Platform. This will enable it to create better and more useful data that can be put towards improving health outcomes.
