Germany to ban sale of HTC handsets

Following a ruling by a German court, Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer HTC may face a sales ban of its smartphones and other mobile devices in Germany, adding another page to the company's rough history of sales issues and plummeting market share. The ruling comes after a lawsuit by Acacia Research Corporation, a U.S.-based patent licensing firm which sued HTC over unlicensed use of standard-essential patents - patents which affect standard mobile technologies, and regulate how companies can use those technologies to earn a profit.

(Telecompaper) Snapchat's base in the Netherlands is growing quickly, with almost 2 million consumers having the app installed on their smartphones in June. This is nearly 900,000 more than a year ago, according to the latest research from Telecompaper. The app, used for sharing photos and videos, is especially popular with young people, with 71 percent of 12-19 year-olds saying they have Snapchat on their phones. This drops to 28 percent of those in their 20s and just 2 percent of 50-64 year-olds, according to the most recent Dutch Apps Market report from Telecompaper.
Alibaba, China Telecom launch handsets for rural shoppers

(Telecompaper) Alibaba Group and China Telecom will sell low-cost mobile phones with software developed especially for mobile online shopping. Via this initiative, Alibaba and China Telecom plan to boost the use of e-commerce services by China's rural population. Dubbed 'Tianyi Taobao Shopping Handsets', the mobile phones included in the offer will come pre-installed with either the Mobile Taobao shopping app or the YunOS mobile operating system developed by Alibaba, depending upon the intended user base.

Broadcom today reported solid results for the first quarter of 2015, with revenue driven by high-end smartphone and broadband access markets. Net revenue for the first quarter ending March 31 was $2.06 billion, a decrease of 4% from the previous quarter and increase of 3.7% year-over-year.
