LG smartphone shipments soar 26% to 15.4 mln in Q1

(Telecompaper) LG Electronics announced a net profit of KRW 38.4 billion in the first quarter, up 0.3 percent from the year before but rising significantly from the loss of over 205 million reported in the fourth quarter. The operating profit lifted 2.2 percent from the year earlier to KRW 305.2 billion. Revenues were virtually unchanged at KRW 13.99 trillion, with soaring smartphone sales offset by modest revenue declines in TVs. LG's mobile division recorded its highest first-quarter revenues since introducing its first Android device in 2010, with shipments rising 26 percent year-on-year to 15.4 million smartphones. Revenues advanced 5 percent to KRW 3.6 trillion and operation profit margins improved both quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year. Sales in North America jumped 66 percent from the year before, while sales in Korea grew 57 percent from the previous quarter with the introduction of the G Flex2 premium smartphone with Plastic-OLED display. The launch of the LG G4 in the second quarter is expected to strengthen the company's presence in the premium smartphone segment and further improve profitability.

China Telecom net profit down 9.2% in Q1

(Telecompaper) China Telecom reported first-quarter revenues down 2.1 percent year-on-year to CNY 81.45 billion. Service revenues slightly decreased by 0.2 percent to CNY 72.7 billion. EBITDA also decreased by 2.2 percent to CNY 24.5 billion, while net profit went down 9.2 percent to CNY 5 billion. For the first quarter of 2015, the number of mobile subscribers of the group reached 189 million, following a cumulative net addition of 3.20 million users in the period.

Orange France doubles mobile adds in Q1

(Telecompaper) Orange France reported revenue down 1.6 percent to EUR 4.72 billion, on a comparable basis and excluding the impact of regulatory measures in the first quarter. The operator added 164,000 net mobile customers in the quarter, nearly twice the 85,000 added in the year-earlier period. Customer growth was driven by fleet management related exceptional gross sales in the enterprise market and a record retail adds. Mobile service revenue declined 4.8 percent to EUR 1.85 billion. Growth was also spurred by mobile equipment sales, up 24.9 percent. Orange said the effect of price decreases on Sosh, Open and Origami plans in 2012 and 2013 are gradually lessening. Orange France's contract customer base grew 6.6 percent to 22.41 million. 4G customers reached 4.5 million, up by 800,000 in the first quarter. Fixed service revenue declined by 1.6 percent to EUR 2.58 billion, although fixed broadband revenue rose 1.1 percent.

Orange has strong additions, stable revenue, EBITDA in Q1

(Telecompaper) Orange reported strong customer additions in the first quarter, with revenue and EBITDA nearly stable, excluding the effect of regulatory measures. Revenue declined by 0.9 percent on a comparable basis to EUR 9.67 billion, reflecting an improving trend in Europe mainly related to mobile equipment and services, with continued steady growth in Africa and the Middle East. A focus on cost reduction has allowed Orange to halve the decline in stated EBITDA to EUR 55 million in the first quarter, compared to a EUR 120 million decline in the year-earlier period, on a comparable basis. The continuing fibre rollout saw Capex rise by 3 percent to EUR 1.19 billion, or 12.3 percent of revenue. Orange's revenue in Europe, including France, declined by 1.4 percent on a historical basis to EUR 9.67 billion in the first quarter. In Africa and the Middle East it rose by 10.8 percent to EUR 1.12 billion, but in Enterprise it declined by 1.3 percent to EUR 1.55 billion. Orange had 188.2 million mobile customers at the end of March, up 6.2 percent (11 mln net additions) on a comparable basis. The group had 100.6 million mobile customers in Africa and the Middle East, up 11.3 percent (10.2 mln). Orange Money customers shot up by 48 percent to 13.3 million. Orange group confirmed its target of EUR 11.9 to 12.1 billion restated EBITDA for this year, with net debt to EBITDA at around 2x. The board confirmed the divided of EUR 0.60 per share for 2015, with a EUR 0.20 interim dividend to be paid by the end of the year. The balance of the 2014 dividend, EUR 0.40 per share, will be paid on 10 June.
