SmartThings updates home hub, adds video alerts
2015-09-03 14:58:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) SmartThings, the smart home developer acquired a year ago by Samsung, has unveiled a new hub, sensors and app at the IFA show in Berlin. The Samsung SmartThings Hub connects to sensors throughout the home to control doors, electric outlets, water leaks and other home functions such as surveillance. The new Hub enables video streaming, has battery backup up to 10 hours, and can run certain functions locally to improve performance and continue to operate without an internet connection. It can connect to other devices over ZigBee, Z-Wave and local internet connections and also includes two USB ports and embedded Bluetooth. The new collection of Samsung SmartThings sensors are smaller and have been redesigned with a sleeker, more contemporary look, the company said. The SmartThings app included to control the equipment was redesigned for easier navigation and a more intuitive experience. Users can now directly organize and control connected devices by room, view live streaming from cameras, set up and run routines and explore the marketplace of nearly 200 devices now compatible with SmartThings. One new feature is the Smart Home Monitor, to receive alerts and take action when SmartThings detects unwanted entry or motion, smoke or fire, leaks, or other important activity. With the new hub and a connected camera, customers can also receive video clips over the app, including archive footage stored in the hub. Video clips will eventually be a premium feature within Smart Home Monitor but are available in beta as a free trial through 2015. After the free trial, a premium version of Smart Home Monitor with video clips will cost USD 4.99 per month. Live streaming will always be free.

A savage storm with wind, rain and lightning that damaged buildings, knocked down trees, utility poles and power lines added up to sweaty predicaments for many Phoenix residents. For those without power for extended periods, the late-summer outages meant no air conditioning at home, forcing them to head to coffee shops or the homes of friends or relatives.
