Federal regulators have dropped a case questioning whether Southern California Edison violated rules when it installed faulty equipment at the now-closed San Onofre nuclear power plant. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission ruling Thursday concluded the issue was no longer relevant since the coastal reactors between Los Angeles and San Diego are retired.

The U.S. auto safety watchdog, toughening its stance against manufacturer defects, announced a record $105 million in fines against Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV over lapses in safety recalls involving millions of vehicles. The Italian-U.S. automaker's consent agreement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration contains an unprecedented buyback option covering hundreds of thousands of vehicles, including more than 1 million Jeep sport utility vehicles, whose owners can receive a trade-in or a financial incentive to get their vehicles repaired.

World's first malaria vaccine one step closer after regulators recommend licence

The shot, called RTS,S or Mosquirix and developed by British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline over 30 years in partnership with the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative, would be the first licensed human vaccine against a parasitic disease and could help prevent millions of cases of malaria in countries that use it. Recommendations for a drug licence made by the European Medicines Agency are normally endorsed by the European Commission within a couple of months.
