Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare approved the Company's New Drug Application for the use of Strensiq A as a treatment for patients in Japan with hypophosphatasia , a life-threatening, ultra-rare metabolic disorder. Strensiq, a bone-targeted enzyme replacement therapy, is the first therapy approved in Japan for the treatment of patients with HPP.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a potential blockbuster drug by Boston-based Vertex Pharmaceuticals to treat cystic fibrosis that is expected to make the company profitable within three years. The drug, called Orkambi, is a combination of the company's existing drug, Kalydeco, with a new drug which makes it usable by about four times as many patients with the disease.

AT&T's $48.5 billion deal to buy DirecTV is set to be cleared by U.S. antitrust officials without any conditions, said a person familiar with deliberations by the Justice Department. The merger still needs approval from the Federal Communications Commission, which could demand concessions such as following the agency's net neutrality rules.
