The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is giving the public an opportunity to comment and ask questions about Intel's proposed air quality permit during a Thursday, Nov. 5 public hearing. The hearing will be held at the Hillsboro Civic Center, 150 E. Main St. , from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The state proposes to approve an expansion of Intel's semiconductor manufacturing facilities at the company's Aloha and Ronler Acres campuses and approve higher emission limits for air pollutants because of the expansion, according to a 121-page department document available on the department's website .

Based on readily available technologies used in industry, final Steam Electric Effluent Limitation Guidelines reinforce ongoing trend towards cleaner, more modern plants. Standards provide flexibility in implementation via phased-in approach. This finalized rule by U.S. EPA will reduce discharge of mercury, arsenic, lead, and selenium into America's waterways from steam electric power plants by 1.4 billion pounds annually as well as reduce water withdrawal by 57 billion gallons per year.
