Mozilla ships Firefox 26 with limited click-to-play security

Mozilla on Tuesday released Firefox 26, which kicked off a limited form of click-to-play and patched 15 security vulnerabilities, six marked "critical." Click-to-play -- a security feature that requires users to authorize the use of a plug-in when a website or page element requires it -- has been adopted by other browsers as protection against a rising tide of exploits that leverage bugs in plug-ins, particularly Adobe's Flash Player and Oracle's Java.

Mozilla ushers in new Firefox UI

Mozilla on Monday began rolling out its first major Firefox user interface (UI) change in more than three years, seeding early adopters of the "Nightly" build with the new "Australis" revamp. Nightly builds are designed for preliminary testing, and as the name implies, are automatically updated each night to that day's edition. Firefox's Nightly builds are Mozilla's roughest-edged editions.

Mozilla released 10 patches for three versions of its Firefox browser on Tuesday, five of which are considered critical and could be used to remotely install malicious code.The U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team warned that the problems "could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code, bypass intended access restrictions, cause a denial-of-service condition or obtain sensitive information."
