Longtime Internet and mobile services player Tucows is getting into the gigabit services game with the acquisition of a small fiber network and ISP in Virginia. Tucows , which offers everything from domain name registration to mobile service through subsidiary Ting Mobile, a Sprint Corp. MVNO, has acquired the assets of Blue Ridge InternetWorks, which provides high speed Internet access and hosting to more than 3,000 customers in Central Virginia.

AT&T Inc. says it is moving forward with plans to build out a gigabit Internet service in Charlotte, despite its CEOs recent comments about halting the endeavor. In November, Chief Executive Randall Stephenson told analysts the company wouldn't go forward with plans to bring its GigaPower product to consumers and businesses in 100 U.S. cities until the Federal Communications Commission decided how internet providers would be regulated under proposed net neutrality rules.

Last December customers were peppering wireless LAN vendors with questions about whether to upgrade to the pre-standard-but-certified 802.11ac products flooding the market or hold off until 2015, when more powerful "Wave 2" Gigabit Wifi gear was expected to become prevalent. A year later, even though Wave 2 products have begun trickling into the market, many IT shops seem less preoccupied with Wave 2 and more focused on installing the Wave 1 11ac routers, access points and other products at hand.
