Apple today started taking orders for its pricey Mac Pro workstation, but shipping dates almost immediately slipped to February, irritating customers who have been awaiting the 'dark tower' desktop computer. On Wednesday, Apple said it would kick off orders of the Mac Pro today after teasing customers since June with images and descriptions of the radically redesigned machine.

Apple has announced that its new Mac Pro will be available to order starting Thursday. It unveiled the system in June at the Worldwide Developers Conference, surprising attendees with its cylindrical design. The aluminum body is just an eighth of the size of a standard tower unit -- 9.9 inches tall, 6.6 inches in diameter and weighing in at around 11 pounds.

At long last, Apple's new, incredibly small Mac Pro is going on sale. From December 19 you'll be able to pick up an entry-level Mac Pro for $3000 (quad-core). The mid-range six-core model will set you back $4000. Pricing for the eight- and 12-core systems is not yet available, but a fully maxed out system -- with two FirePro graphics cards and 1TB of solid-state storage -- is expected to cost around $10,000.
