After Tesla and Google, Apple appears to be readying for a plunge into the industry long rooted far away in the steel belt of the US upper Midwest. According to various media reports, the maker of iPhones and iPads has created a special unit baptized "Titan" with hundreds of staff to begin developing an electric car, with 2020 the target date.

Tesla could sell cars in Texas if Legislature passes new bills

Employees at Tesla's gallery at NorthPark Center in Dallas aren't allowed to talk price or take customers for test drives because of dealer franchise laws. Bills filed by Texas lawmakers Thursday, if passed, would allow Tesla Motors Inc. to sell its electric cars directly to consumers.

Would Tesla Motors stumble if it sold its high-end electric cars through franchised dealerships like every other car manufacturer must in Texas? Elon Musk, the company's CEO and a champion of disruptive technologies, seems to think so. "If we were to go through them, we would fail," he told Texas Tribune CEO and Editor-in-Chief Evan Smith last month during an interview at the Texas Transportation Forum.

Tesla joined by Koch Brothers, Sierra Club in fight with dealers

SAN FRANCISCO -- Talk about strange bedfellows. The environmental group Sierra Club and Americans for Prosperity, the political action group funded by the Koch brothers, are both backing Tesla Motors Inc. in its battle to avoid franchised dealers and sell cars direct to consumers.
