Dutch mobile service revenues fall 9% in Q1
2014-06-05 09:23:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) The decline in mobile service revenues in the Netherlands accelerated to 9.0 percent on an annual basis in the first quarter of 2014, as the market suffers from the weak economy, regulatory effects and the sharp drop in SMS use. According to Telecompaper's quarterly mobile market monitor, mobile service revenues were down 3.4 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2013, to a total EUR 1.25 billion. While Q1 is seasonally weak, the annual drop in service revenue accelerated to 9.0 percent from 5.8 percent a year ago, amid a continued fall in voice revenue and a double-digit drop in SMS revenue. While data services are still growing, the fall-off in SMS in favour of IP applications meant non-voice service revenue grew only 2.3 percent year-on-year in Q1. As voice revenue declines, the share of non-voice in total service revenue rose to 44.8 percent in the quarter. Among the three mobile operators, mainly T-Mobile but also Vodafone increased their shares of the market's service revenues in Q1, as KPN lost the most revenues both on an annual and quarterly basis. T-Mobile increased its market share annually by 2.1 percent points, and Vodafone added 0.4 percent, while KPN lost 2.5 percent points.

Megafon OIBDA flat, revenues up 10.6% in Q1
2014-05-29 12:35:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Russian operator Megafon reported first-quarter OIBDA little changed year-on-year, at RUB 32.50 billion, due to extra costs for the Olympics in Sochi, higher sales of low-margin handsets and the weaker ruble. Revenues were up 10.6 percent from a year ago to RUB 74.88 billion, driven by a 45 percent increase in data revenue to RUB 16.17 billion. Mobile service revenues were up 8.6 percent to RUB 64.72 billion, helped by the takeover of Scartel and a 7.5 percent annual increase in the customer base. Fixed-line revenues rose 17.1 percent to RUB 5.29 billion, helped by the Dream wholesale project, and equipment sales were up 35.1 percent to RUB 4.86 billion, driven by the operator's own white-label devices. Megafon's net profit fell 42.7 percent year-on-year to RUB 7.23 billion, hurt by forex losses and higher depreciation and amortisation from the Scartel takeover. Capital expenditure doubled compared to the year-ago period to RUB 8.35 billion due to the continued expansion of the LTE network and upgrade of 3G services. As a result, free cash flow decreased by 40.7 percent to RUB 13.55 billion. Megafon maintained its full-year outlook for revenue growth of 6-8 percent and an OIBDA margin of at least 44 percent. Capital spending is estimated at RUB 58-64 billion for 2014. The company said it was also planning to start paying interim dividends.

Rostelecom grows fixed revenues 4% in Q1
2014-05-27 11:53:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Russian operator Rostelecom reported first-quarter revenues of RUB 80.4 billion, up 1 percent from a year earlier. Excluding its mobile activities, which have been spun off in a joint venture with Tele2 Russia, the fixed-line business grew sales 4 percent to RUB 73.2 billion. OIBDA fell to RUB 26.5 billion from RUB 29.4 billion a year ago, and the margin dropped to 33.0 percent from 27.0 in Q1 2013. Net profit amounted to RUB 6.9 billion, an increase of 8 percent compared with the same period last year. Rostelecom reduced capex by 60 percent year-on year to RUB 10.0 billion or 12.4 percent of revenue. It generated free cash flow of RUB 12.7 billion, and net debt totaled 184.0 billion at the end of March. Rostelecom said results were in line with its budget and support its proposal to increase dividends. It continues to offset the drop in fixed-line revenues with expansion in broadband and TV and targets another RUB 5 billion in cost savings this year to shore up margins and offset inflation. The operator finished the quarter with 10.8 million broadband customers, up 8 percent from a year earlier. This includes 4.3 million on fibre, an increase of 28 percent year-on-year. Pay-TV subscribers also rose by 8 percent, to 7.6 million, with the IPTV base up 33 percent to 2.3 million. The number of mobile subscribers increased by 9 percent to 14.8 million at the end of March.
