D-Link has published beta patches for vulnerabilities in the firmware of many of its IP surveillance cameras, which could allow a hacker to intercept a video stream. The company said on its support forum that it will publish a full release of the upgraded firmware within a month. Some of D-Link's consumer IP cameras in its Cloud product line will automatically receive the updates.

Windows 8 and Windows RT are subject to critical vulnerabilities that will be addressed on Microsoft's Patch Tuesday next week, both by virtue of supporting Internet Explorer 10. The bulletin for the vulnerabilities addresses similar problems in all versions of Internet Explorer from IE6 through IE10. That means affected operating systems include XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.

Sophos fixes vulnerabilities in its Web security appliance

Security vendor Sophos has released an update for the software used on its Web gateway security appliance in order to address three serious vulnerabilities in the product's Web-based user interface. The vulnerabilities could allow attackers to gain access to configuration files containing sensitive information like plaintext passwords for other internal network services, execute commands as a highly privileged system user and launch phishing attacks against users of the appliance.
