Houston Chronicle: An undated handout photo received on May 30, 2016, shows dying coral colonised by seaweed at Lizard Island during the current bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef. At least 35 percent of corals in the northern and central regions of Australia's Great Barrier Reef are dead or dying from a mass bleaching event, scientists said on May 30, 2016. The assessment was made after months of aerial and underwater surveys after the worst bleaching in recorded history first became evident in March as sea...

CNN: With the recovery of four bodies on Friday, the death toll rose to nine in the overturning of an Army truck in floodwaters at Fort Hood, Texas, the Army said. Twelve soldiers were on a training mission when their vehicle became stuck in the flooded creek in a remote section of the post. Soldiers in a following vehicle rescued three of their comrades after the truck overturned, Maj. Gen. John Uberti told reporters. "In this incident, we`ve lost nine soldiers," a grim-faced Uberti said. U.S....

Guardian: Authorities in central Texas have found two more bodies along flooded streams, bringing the death toll from flooding in the state to six. It was unclear late on Sunday whether a body found in Travis County near Austin was one of the two people still missing in Texas. An 11-year-old boy was still missing in central Kansas. The latest flooding victim identified by authorities was a woman who died when the car she was riding in was swept from the street by the flooded Cypress Creek about 1.30am...

Atlas Obscura: Its been unseasonably warm this past week in Atlas Obscuras headquarters New York City, with temperatures about ten degrees higher than average. But that's not really as noteworthy, as say, India recording its hottest day ever, at 123.8 Fahrenheit on May 20th. Globally, 2016 is on track to be the hottest year on record, surpassing the current record-holder, 2015. In fact, since 2014, every successive year has been the hottest year on record. This animated spiral, created by Jay Alder of the...

A whole new ballgame: 35% coral death in parts of Great Barrier Reef
2016-05-29 15:47:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Post: We knew this was coming. For months, coral reef experts have been loudly, and sometimes mournfully, announcing that much of the treasured Great Barrier Reef has been hit by severe coral bleaching, thanks to abnormally warm ocean waters. Bleaching, though, isnt the same as coral death. When symbiotic algae leave corals bodies and the animals then turn white or bleach, they can still bounce back if environmental conditions improve. The Great Barrier Reef has seen major bleaching in some...
